Dave Holland and the Overtone Quartet

Sunday · October 04, 2009
Bailey Hall · 8pm

Dave Holland's Overtone Quartet*:
featuring Dave Holland, bass; Chris Potter, saxophone;
Steve Nelson, vibraphone; Eric Harland, drums.

[*Note: 'Monterey' has been re-billed as 'Overtone', due to vibraphonist Steve Nelson replacing piano for this performance.]

For over four decades, Dave Holland "has defined the best in jazz" (JazzTimes), commanding attention as few bassists ever have.  Known for bringing together extraordinary and innovative musicians for his collaborative projects, his fall 2009 ensemble The Overtone Quartet showcases dynamic saxophonist Chris Potter, Holland favorite Steve Nelson on vibraphone, and virtuoso drummer Eric Harland.

 "When Dave Holland walks on-stage, he gets reception unlike that of any other jazz star. It’s an encouraging sign for jazz, because Holland is neither flashy nor young ... Rather, Holland is a master bassist and bandleader, one of the most sophisticated composers and arrangers in the jazz world."    - The Boston Globe

"The commander-in-chief of a first rate, cutting edge group has to be everything: creative genius and effective entrepreneur, power player and diplomat, steeped in experience but fresh and unjaded. Few current leaders exemplify the role as well as bassist Dave Holland."  - Downbeat

This tour of the Overtone Quartet is made possible by a grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Programs. www.midatlanticarts.org
